Hi Beth,

I will be interested to hear how your bee-keeping experiment comes along. I hope you will take care to keep the bees as ethically as possible. Here is some information about the vegan concerns of honey and other bee products: http://www.vegansociety.com/animals/exploitation/bees.php

I have been researching this quite a bit lately, mostly by speaking with the beekeepers I have met. I have been wondering if it is really possible to be a conscious beekeeper, as some say they are. The practices people say you need to use seem to vary wildly. I think if it is really possible to collect honey compassionately it is probably more ethical for me to eat that than sugar.

So, keep me posted,
Jo xx

P.S. Does the foraging group still exist? When is our next jaunt?

My boyfriend and I did something simlar in Roichmond last year, although he only lasted three months so we didnt get the year out. But we did do a lot of research which you might find useful. See the blog - which is now about general wild food foraging and other food adventures - for more info:

Hi Beth - just discovered your blog following the mention in the Freeconomy email. Good luck with it and I look forward to joining in, in September...although I don't know what I'm going to do about my little boy's love of bananas. :-D
